March mothing

Shoulder Stripe Earophila badiata Tophill Low NR, East Yorkshire March 2014

The month of March has seen a regulation trapping period at Tophill Low NR, East Yorkshire… Shoulder-stripe Earophila badiata perhaps the most glamorous moth of the period. The Orthosia group is the species of the period, Hebrew Character O. gothica and Clouded Drab O. incerta the species most regularly encountered, with smaller numbers of Lead-coloured Drab O. populeti and Common Quaker O. cerasi.

Diurnea fagella Tophill Low NR, East Yorkshire March 2014

Diurnea fagella was only added to the Tophill list in 2011. Normally out in early March, Doug Fairweather and myself have so far found very few – perhaps a population crash or cool temperatures meaning the species has held back the flight season… we’ll find out more in April.
